On Saturday, October 7, 2006 in Oakland, CA. the World Trust will present the world premiere of Making Whiteness Visible, a film by Shakti Butler, Ph.D.

Dr. Butler has been a regular participant and facilitator at the annual White Privilege Conferences, and filmed for this project at two or more conferences. Thus word of this film leaked out long ago and it’s no surprise that such a film has been made. But now we begin to see what work the film can do. Will it become a common tool for raising consciousness, like the Color of Fear? Will it tap into a growing movement by white people toward anti-racism? Will it bring about some change? It may take a year or two to tell, but we congratulate World Trust on the premier and wish the film much success.

Making Whiteness Visible features the up close and personal stories of white activists and their ongoing journeys of transformation. Participants will talk about being unconsciousness about their learned and internalized sense of white supremacy. They will share what was required - what actions they took - to move through the common first stages of denial, defensiveness, guilt, fear and shame into making solid commitments towards ending racism. In addition to creating an informative social media piece that catalyzes powerful dialogue and supports learning and change for all people, the video will also provide harbor for white people to begin or continue the internal transformation that white allies must undertake to undo race-based oppression.

What has been most surprising, according to World Trust, are the unexpected numbers of people who have called their office, having heard about the project, and wanting to purchase the video sight unseen. They anticipate that this video will be even more successful than their current titles, The Way Home and Light in the Shadows.

The premier takes place Saturday, October 7, 2006
